Unfortunately the image for February 2002 is a Silvertip Shark that was photographed in Kavieng, Papua New Guinea. I say it is unfortunate because this shark, among the other eight that were frequenting this reef were decimated by fisherman seeking shark fins. The problem had its inception, perhaps, when the Silvertips became accustomed to being fed at this location on a regular basis. As such, they associated this location with food, and the sound of a boats motor with the people who were kind enough to bring that food. A very sad ending to a magnificent animal.
